Flash

Power Action Lightning Legs

About This Vintage Toy

The Flash character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. The original Flash first appeared in Flash Comics #1 released in November 1939; however, it was cover-dated in January 1940. The original Flash comic was published by All-American Publications, one of three publishing companies that would eventually merge to operate under what we now know as DC Comics.

Many identities have used the Flash name over the years. Although Barry Allen was the secret identity used by the Super Powers Collection version of this character, the original identity went by Jay Garrick in the early 1940s. The original Jay Garrick Flash, back-storied a college student who obtained his superpower speed through the consumption of hard water vapors; however, when re-introduced in the 1960s, the Jay Garrick version of the Flash absorbed his superpowers through exposure to heavy water. An alternate Flash character was introduced in the comic The Flash #110 in December of 1959 and featured Wally West as the hero’s identity.

Following the two original Flash identities, the Criminal and Forensic Science Division of Central City Police Departments Assistant scientist position was held by lackadaisical Barry Allen. Barry would frequently frustrate his fiancé Iris Wes with his lethargic personality and lack of punctuality. One evening when he was working late in his lab, a random bolt of lightning struck the lab and hit a supply of chemicals that inadvertently infected him. As a direct result of the chemical infection, Barry Allen quickly discovered that he could run extremely fast and had superhuman reflexes. Following the incident, Barry Allen became the Flash outfitting himself with red tights and a yellow lightning bolt across his chest, reminiscent of the original Fawcett Comics Captain Marvel (also known as Shazam) Superhero character created in 1939. The Barry Allen Flash then became a superhero crime fighter and patrols the streets of Central City, keeping it safe from crime and protecting justice. When in civilian form, Barry Allen creatively stores the Flash costume in a ring that uses a particular gas to compress cloth fibers into tiny molecules.

The Flash action figure offered a mechanical “Power Action Lightning legs” feature that activated simulated rapid running movement when both arms were squeezed inward. The sculpting of the action figure was highly detailed for the time and very reminiscent of any expectations based upon the previous comic books and animated programs. The flash action figure did not include any accessories, and both hands of the Flash were completely sealed in a closed fist sculpt, not allowing for the Flash to grip or support any weapons or accessories.

The Flash action figure offered 7 points of articulation with the hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. The innovative mechanical “Super Power Action” often created loose joints and limbs over time, making some action figures challenging to stand an offer possibility. Finding an action figure with a perfect “Super Power Action” functionality along with mint condition paint and accessories can fetch a much higher value on the current collectors market.
