Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Great Barbarian

About This Vintage Toy

Barbarians are known to be strong, fast, and healthy, robust humans. Specializing in northern terrain, barbarians are skilled trackackers in the forest or mountain regions and are competent mighty warriors. Far different from most other beings of the realm, barbarians instinctively fear and distrust all things magical and will avoid anything or anyone showing evidence of magic. The wildland they dwell in makes the barbarian civilization brave from moment birth. The barbarian known as Northlord can be counted on to be in the forefront of any battle and first to fight an evil dragon or giant sea monster when others cower in fear and for their lives. In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Northlord is a Great Barbarian.

A variation of Northlord with a spring-activated “shield shooter” feature was released in the 1984 series two-wave. The “shield shooter” functioned as a trigger-operated projectile where the emblem of the shield would shoot out when engaging the enemy. The Northlord action figure included a removable helmet, battle-ax, shield, and sword with a belt loop hook to holster his sword.

Many LJN Advanced Dungeons & Dragons action figures featured a three and three-quarter-inch format similar to other competitors’ popular toy lines of the 80s. However, a small number of produced action figures in this toyline were disproportionate in standard consistent action figure size to represent the accuracy of giants in the DND role-playing game. Northlord was one of 3 action figures released in series one that innovatively increased the figure size to 5 inches tall. The LJN Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Northlord action figure offered 5 points of articulation with the hips, shoulders, and neck.
