M.A.S.K. Firecracker

With Hondo MacLean Action Figure and the Blaster Mask

About This Vintage Toy

The Firecracker is a Chevy single-cab off-road pick-up truck converted into a jacked-up recon vehicle when in attack mode. This vehicle was a part of the 1985 first series toy line original release. The truck was molded from a mid-1980s Chevrolet K30 pick-up was piloted by the included Hondo MacLean action figure with the Blaster mask.
The orange short-bed dually Chevy pick-up featured a large rollbar with KC style overhead fog lights and a trailer hitch in its bed that secured the vehicle’s spare tire. The truck also included a second motorcycle vehicle latched onto the tailgate’s back bumper. Including this motorcycle as a second vehicle made this particular vehicle in very high demand for young children since essentially two vehicles were considered included in one set. In addition to the Thunderhawk, this vehicle also featured licensed Goodyear rubber tires offering the additional realistic appeal of the vehicle’s detail.

The vehicle could open both the driver and passenger side doors and support two action figures inside the cab. Black trimmed fender flares and customized fog lights on the front bumper bar offered additional aesthetic features. The back-hitched motorcycle could be removed from a basic resting bracket positioned on the tailgate, and once separated, the tailgate could open and close just like a traditional pick-up truck.

By simply pressing a slide switch on the chassis, the Firecracker’s M.A.S.K. attack mode is activated and elevates the body of the whole truck upon its spring-loaded frame. The vehicle body elevation then reveals two rear-facing guns positioned under the fenders of each wheel. It automatically releases two additional grille gun barrels that deploy from the vehicle’s front grill. The spare tire becomes a projectile boomerang tire, automatically deploying retractable blades from its tread once released. Unlike the Matt trackker action figure, Hondo MacLean’s attire appears much more casual with everyday 80’s styled clothing and features a pair of fixed binoculars around his neck.

The Blaster Mask

The Larger Style Mask that Replaced the Original Smaller Version
The Original Smaller Style Mask with No Chest Plate

The Hondo MacLean action figure featured the Blaster mask that “pretends” to project proton laser beams.” Kenner’s sarcastic use of the word “pretends” on the packaging was to ensure the user the mask itself had no actual powers, and the user must pretend that the mask had specific abilities. The original smaller mask version shown above was quickly replaced with a larger mask version that included an extended chest plate. The justification for the change to the more oversized mask was due to a possible choking hazard with small children. The original smaller mask version is far rarer to find on the collectors market and is valued slightly higher. The value of the accessories alone are often worth more than the figure itself, Depending on the mint condition of the action figure.

Hondo MacLean Action Figure

The Hondo MacLean action figure offered 7 points of articulation with the hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. Due to the overall reduced size of the action figure and to save cost on manufacturing tooling, the M.A.S.K. toy line limited the facial detail on all of the action figures in every series compared to other action figure toy lines produced by Kenner and other competitors. It was thought that consistent mask removal would wear off any painted facial detail paint and that the mask would be on the action figure in most cases during play.

Included Accessories

Ejectable Boomerang Tire With Blades
Motorcycle Hitch
Motorcycle

The M.A.S.K. Firecracker included an ejectable boomerang with retractable tire blades, a motorcycle and motorcycle hitch mounted to the tailgate of the vehicle’s back. The value of the accessories alone is often worth more than the figure itself, Depending on the mint condition of the action figure.

Original Packaging

Packaging Front
Packaging Back

The original product packaging was a rectangular box with corrugated inserts to secure the vehicle. An illustrated action-based scene, logo, and action figure image appeared on the front of the box, while detailed transformation notations were featured on the back. NOTE: Collectors that have the original card back offer increased value to the collectible. (MWC = Mint with card) If the card back still has a bubble intact, that also increases the value. If the action figure is factory sealed on the original card (MOC= Mint on card), collectors can obtain the most value from that particular item.

Product Instructions

“We Really Do Care!” A bold customer service message Kenner printed on many of the product paperwork included with most Kenners products. Kenner provided detailed hand-drawn instructions on how to operate the vehicle’s features and where to apply the included stickers.
