M.A.S.K. Jackhammer

With Cliff Dagger Action Figure and the Torch Mask

About This Vintage Toy

The M.A.S.K. Jackhammer was released in Kenners first wave of this popular toy line. The Jackhammer V.E.N.O.M.’s archetypal evil villain style all-black truck and was inspired by the 1985 Ford Bronco very popular. The modified bronco was driven by the typical-looking 80s bad guy, Cliff Dagger, who uses the Torch mask. The all-terrain Bronco style 4×4 transformed into a turret assault vehicle with swiveling anti-aircraft weapon.

The vehicle also featured a set of licensed Goodyear rubber tires on vibrant chrome wheels and drivers and passenger side opening doors that supported action figures inside the car. Topping off its sleek bad guy persona was the black exterior paint job and rooftop spoiler.

To convert the vehicle to attack mode, pressing down on the rear bumper would make the rear roof section pop up, becoming a rotating turret with two extending gun barrels. An action figure could be placed in the seated position inside the rotating turret to offer additional firepower to the vehicle when engaging the enemy. Located under the turret section was a handheld machine gun that would be mounted to the top of the toilet for additional firepower. A protective armored shield would cover the windshield by sliding the hood of the vehicle towards the backside of the car. Moving the vehicle forward would activate the forward driver-side positioned guns to move in and out in in an alternating motion, reproducing a firing action.

Cliff Dagger is dressed in ordinary Street Close, reminiscing what may be considered a typical convict or criminal in the 1980s. Waring dark clothing, a black knit cap, a pistol holster, and a stereotypical bad guy eyepatch to top it all off.

The Torch Mask

The Larger Style Mask that Replaced the Original Smaller Version
The Original Smaller Style Mask with No Chest Plate

The Cliff Dagger action figure featured the Torch Mask, which “pretended” to be a flamethrower. Kenner’s sarcastic use of the word “pretends” on the packaging ensured the user that the mask itself had no actual powers and the user must pretend that the mask had specific abilities. The smaller mask version shown below was quickly replaced with a larger one that included a slightly extended chest plate. The justification for the change to the more oversized mask was due to a possible choking hazard with children. The original smaller mask version is far rarer to find on the collectors market and is slightly valued. The value of the accessories alone is often worth more than the figure itself, depending on the mint condition of the action figure.

Cliff Dagger Action Figure

The Cliff Dagger action figure offered 7 points of articulation with the hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. Due to the overall reduced size of the action figure and to save cost on manufacturing tooling, the M.A.S.K. toy line limited the facial detail on all of the action figures in every series compared to other action figure toy lines produced by Kenner and other competitors. It was thought that consistent mask removal would wear off any painted facial detail paint and that the mask would be on the action figure in most cases during play.

Included Accessories

The M.A.S.K. Jackhammer included a portable Air Defence Gun that was stored underneath the rotating turret went in undercover street mode. The value of the accessories alone is often worth more than the figure itself, Depending on the mint condition of the collectible.

Original Packaging

Packaging Front
Packaging Back

The original product packaging was a rectangular box with corrugated inserts to secure the vehicle inside. An illustrated action-based scene, logo, and action figure image appeared on the front of the box, while detailed transformation notations were featured on the back. NOTE: Collectors that have the original card back offer increased value to the collectible. (MWC = Mint with card) If the card back still has a bubble intact, that also increases the value. If the action figure is factory sealed on the original card (MOC= Mint on card), collectors can obtain the most value from that particular item.

Product Instructions

“We Really Do Care!” A bold customer service message Kenner printed on many of the product paperwork included with most Kenners products. Kenner provided detailed hand-drawn instructions on how to operate the vehicle’s features and where to apply the included stickers.
