M.A.S.K. Thunder Hawk

With Matt Trakker Action Figure and the Spectrum Mask

About This Vintage Toy

Kenner produced the M.A.S.K. Thunder Hawk in 1985. This awe-inspiring set of plastic wheels was the most popular vehicle in the original series due to its sleek transforming capabilities that embodied the look of the 1980s. The sports car included operator/leader: Matt Trakker and the Spectrum Mask. Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker occasionally piloted this vehicle from time to time in the animated series. In conventional “street mode,” the automobile was a stylish red Chevrolet Camaro Z28, a trendy sports car in the 1980s. When in battle action Mode, the Camaro converted into a gull-winged door jet fighter plane with weaponry consisting of two retractable lasers missile launchers two aerial stun bombs. This flagship vehicle transformed from sports car mode to jet fighter mode with a button on the vehicle top. This popular vehicle was often the featured icon throughout Kenner’s marketing material as it was one of the most popular vehicles featured in the series.

An additional Matt Trakker character was included with the Rhino tractor-trailer vehicle, also released in series one. However, the Rhino version of the Matt Trakker action figure was presented in a different outfit and mask styling. The original release of the M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk included a smaller version of Matt Trakker’s Spectrum Mask and was later changed to a larger size mask with a chest plate extension to avoid a possible choking hazard with young children. The much smaller original masks are far more rare and worth slightly more on the collectors market.

The vehicle also featured a working seat belt to securely strap in the Matt Trakker action figure when converted to the open door gull-winged jet fighter mode. The M.A.S.K. vehicle also included a mini-comic and a fold-out poster along with user instructions and a self-applied decal sheet. As stated on the packaging, the printed Goodyear name on the vehicle’s tires was a registered trademark of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and was reproduced by permission. The Goodyear tire branding provided additional realistic authentication as Goodyear tires were a top-rated brand in the 1980s.

The Spectrum Mask

The Larger Style Mask that Replaced the Original Smaller Version
The Original Smaller Style Mask with No Chest Plate

Matt Trakker action figure featured the Spectrum Mask, which “pretended” to create high-frequency radio interference. Kenner’s sarcastic use of the word “pretends” on the packaging ensured the user that the toy mask itself had no actual powers and that the user must pretend that the mask had specific abilities. The smaller mask version shown below was quickly replaced with a larger version that included an extended chest plate. The justification for the change to the more oversized mask was due to a possible choking hazard with children. The original smaller mask version is far rarer to find on the collectors market and is valued slightly higher. The value of the accessories alone is often worth more than the figure itself, depending on the mint condition of the action figure.

Matt Trakker Action Figure

The Matt Trakker action figure offered 7 points of articulation with the hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. Due to the overall reduced size of the action figure and to save cost on manufacturing tooling, the M.A.S.K. toy line limited the facial detail on all of the action figures in every series compared to other action figure toy lines produced by Kenner and other competitors. It was a concern that regular mask removal during play would wear off any painted facial detail color and that the mask would be on the action figure in most cases during play.

Included Accessories

Two Stun Bombs
Pull Trigger to Automatically Release Bombs

The M.A.S.K. Thunder Hawk included 2 “Stun Bombs” that were released automatically by a pull trigger button on the vehicle. The value of the accessories alone is often worth more than the figure itself, Depending on the mint condition of the action figure.

Original Packaging

Packaging Front
Packaging Back

The original product packaging was a rectangular box with corrugated inserts to secure the vehicle. An illustrated action-based scene, logo, and action figure image appeared on the front of the box, while detailed transformation notations were featured on the back. NOTE: Collectors that have the original card back offer increased value to the collectible. (MWC = Mint with card) If the card back still has a bubble intact, that also increases the value. If the action figure is factory sealed on the original card (MOC= Mint on card), collectors can obtain the most value from that particular item.

Product Instructions

“We Really Do Care!” A bold customer service message Kenner printed on many of the product paperwork included with most Kenners products. Kenner provided detailed hand-drawn instructions on how to operate the vehicle’s features and where to apply the included stickers.
