M.A.S.K. Boulder Hill

With Alex Sector Action Figure and the Jackrabbit Mask, and Buddie Hawks Action Figure and the Penetrator Mask

About This Vintage Toy

The headquarters of M.A.S.K. is located at a gas station in Boulder Hill. The gas station is imaginarily functional, complete with gas pumps and a repair garage. Buddie “Clutch” Hawks is M.A.S.K. agent in charge of upkeep on the fleet of transforming vehicles also maintains the gas station’s cover as a working facility. If under attack, the gas station has offensive and defensive transformation abilities, including freeze cannons and armor plating. The headquarters of M.A.S.K. is not your average facility. It is, in fact, a fully functioning secret base that has its own fictitious power supply. There is also an underground transportation system that runs between Matt Trakker’s mansion and the secret headquarters. An incredibly powerful computer supplements the entire facility’s operations and assists team leader Matt Trakker in managing the M.A.S.K. organization.

The headquarters of M.A.S.K. is very unusual; their vehicles are stored there, as well as the energy-revitalizing device that powers the team’s masks. The features and defenses of Boulder Hill, when transformed into M.A.S.K. defense mode, consist of, Anti-Aircraft Turret, Armored pillbox, bunker wall, Gas Pump freeze cannons, flip-down holographic stun cannons, swiveling anti-gravity howitzer, Mountain top falling boulder, and a trap door leading to a detention cell. Some additional features of the playset included a helicopter landing pad, diagnostic vehicle maintenance cables, a computer command panel, and a flip-down radar screen concealed by the gas station Billboard.

The playset included two action figures, Buddie Hawks with the Penetrator mask and Alex Sector with the Jackrabbit mask. Although Alex Sector was classified as the Rhino vehicle systems commander in the animated series, this action figure was not included with the Rhino vehicle and was only available with the Boulder Hill playset and later in a two-pack carded version the following year.

One of the key features of this amazing playset was the ability to launch a falling boulder that would roll down the mountain to add additional defense to an enemy perimeter breach. This feature inspired the name “Boulder Hill,” making the iconic playset live up to its name!

The Penetrator Mask

The Larger Style Mask that Replaced the Original Smaller Version
The Original Smaller Style Mask with No Chest Plate
The Alex Sector action figure featured the Jackrabbit Mask, which “pretended” to utilize super-fast rocket flight. Buddie Hawks action figure featured the Penetrator Mask, which “pretended” vibrates through solid objects. Kenner’s sarcastic use of the word “pretends” on the packaging ensured the user that the mask itself had no actual powers and the user must pretend that the mask had specific abilities. The smaller mask version shown below was quickly replaced with a larger mask version that included an extended chest plate. The justification for the change to the larger mask was due to a possible choking hazard with children. The original smaller mask version is far rarer to find on the collectors market and is valued slightly higher. The value of the accessories alone are often worth more than the figure itself, Depending on the mint condition of the action figure

Alex Sector Action Figure

Buddie Hawks Action Figure

The Alex Sector and Buddie Hawks action figures offered 7 points of articulation with the hips, knees, shoulders, and neck. Due to the overall reduced size of the action figure and to save cost on manufacturing tooling, the M.A.S.K. toy line limited the facial detail on all of the action figures in every series compared to other action figure toy lines produced by Kenner and other competitors. It was thought that consistent mask removal would wear off any painted facial detail paint and that the mask would be on the action figure in most cases during play.

Original Packaging

Packaging Front
Packaging Back
The original product packaging was a rectangular box with corrugated inserts to secure the vehicle inside. An illustrated action-based scene, logo, and action figure image appeared on the front of the box, while detailed transformation notations were featured on the back. NOTE: Collectors that have the original card back offer increased value to the collectible. (MWC = Mint with card) If the card back still has a bubble intact, that also increases the value. If the action figure is factory sealed on the original card (MOC= Mint on card), collectors can obtain the most value from that particular item.

Product Instructions

“We Really Do Care!” A bold customer service message Kenner printed on many of the product paperwork included with most Kenners products. Kenner provided detailed hand-drawn instructions on how to operate the vehicle’s features and where to apply the included stickers.
